***Press Release*** Irvington, NJ, March 9, 2015: Irvington Mayor Tony Vauss Announce Irvington’s First Female Firefighter in Three Decades. Female firefighters have been putting out flames for almost 200 years, while continuing to burn down boundaries of gender discrimination, harassment and negative criticisms from their male counterparts. “We are pleased to announce that Irvington has recruited a female firefighter who is currently in the process of completing the Academy,” said Mayor Vauss. “We have not had a female since 1977 and now in 2015, I am proud to say this is happening in our Township and it is about time it did.” “We have 12 individuals in the Academy at this time," said Director Brown. “They are expected to graduate in April, after which they will complete two weeks of training in the Irvington Fire Department.” “Our female recruit is a resident of Irvington,” indicated Chief Tierney. “As she does not have veteran’s status, she is going toe- to- toe with the male recruits. We look forward to her successfully completing the Academy and becoming part of the Irvington Fire Department.” For additional information, please contact the Irvington Fire Department at 973-399-6507.
